Overview

Marketing Manchester is the agency charged with promoting the city on a national and international stage. It aims to develop the Manchester city-region into a leading leisure, learning and business destination for domestic and international visitors, enhance the national and international reputation of the city-region and promote sustainable economic development and growth. It is the Centre of Excellence for Marketing, Communications and Tourism for the Manchester Growth Company (MGC). As such, it is responsible for the marketing and communications activity for the MGC which also comprises: Economic Solutions Ltd (the parent company) - delivering over £60M of skills, employment and recruitment services to employers and individuals; MIDAS - the city’s inward investment agency; and New Economy - the economic think tank. The Group acts as a key delivery vehicle for the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and the Local Enterprise partnership (LEP).

Following a competitive process held by Manchester Airports Group (Marketing Manchester’s key stakeholder), Warren Partners were chosen to conduct an international search and selection exercise for the next Chairman of the organisation.

Challenge

This was/is a high profile role requiring strong ambassadorial qualities and an individual who would be equally comfortable operating and influencing at regional, national and international levels. Outstanding international credentials where sought, gained through senior level experience within major corporate organisations and/or inward investment enterprises where innovation had driven success. A strong track record of developing businesses in international markets was essential. As Chairman of Marketing Manchester, the appointee would be required to attend board meetings of the Greater Manchester LEP in an ex-officio capacity.

Outcome

A strong shortlist of five candidates was presented comprising high profile figures from both private and public sectors (including three Plc Main Board level executives). Iwan Griffiths, the North West Chairman of leading professional services firm PwC, was appointed chairman; Iwan had previously held leadership roles in South Korea and Japan.

Manchester is a brand recognised around the world and that’s important as we look to develop our business and tourism links as a European city of standing. Iwan and his team will play a vital role in developing that brand even further and ensuring we see even more visitors coming to our region.”
