Team Warren takes on China challenge
The pioneering work of the 'Women for Women' charity has inspired the five members of Team Warren to take part in 'Cycle China', a 450km charity bike ride through the countryside of the Beijing region.
Joëlle Warren, Judith Nicol, Deb Cooper, Vicky Lawton and Estelle Smith are determined to exceed the fantastic total of nearly £20,000 they raised for the charity by taking part in the 2008 'Cycle Cuba' event. In China, they will be joining many other female fundraisers including TV presenter Fern Britton who is on her fifth ride for the charity.
Serious training schedules are already underway, with Team Warren gearing up for the October event with gym work and regular cycling sessions. They have also launched a campaign to attract sponsors among family, friends, colleagues and business contacts.
"We've committed to raising a team total of £15,000 and are funding our own travel costs," explains Joëlle. "Everyone had great fun doing Cycle Cuba and raising a huge amount for such a worthwhile cause that we were all determined to do another cycle challenge. We'll certainly be earning our stripes in the Year of the Tiger!"
Women
for Women raises funds and awareness as well as providing training for research into the causes and treatments of a range of devastating conditions that affect women and their babies. It supports the Institute of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Trust, which carries out vital research into the causes of miscarriage and complications during pregnancy.
Adds Deb Cooper: "It's a gruelling route over long distance, so there will be a real sense of achievement in doing the ride. Cycling through a country also allows you to see local life up close. China's a fascinating place, and even though it will be tough I'm looking forward to riding alongside rivers, through steep gorges, past tiny villages, ancient tombs and historical landmarks including the Great Wall of China."
