Warren Partners - Search and selection of high calibre candidates for high profile executive roles

Mike Penny quoted in Personnel Today

On 28 May 2007, Personnel Today turned the spotlight on Chief Executive of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, whose admission at a conference in 2006 that he ‘culls’ one in fifteen employees every year caused a stir.

The article went on to examine the effectiveness of this type of performance management strategy. Mike Penny, Director at Warren Partners, warned that poor performance can often be the result of bad leadership and that simply sacking those who do not meet standards does not necessarily help companies to focus on their talent.

Mike said: "Companies often spend so much time on underperformers that they forget to stretch the top performers intellectually and to support their development needs. Instead, they can inadvertently punish great performance by overloading them with extra work."
