Mike Petty quoted in the Manchester Evening News
"It is a good investment of time for any executive to speak to a headhunter because you never know when you might need them, so avoiding or not returning their calls might be considered an unwise move. Just because you are content where you are working today does not mean that you will be content tomorrow so it is not worth cutting all contact," warned Mike Petty, Director at Warren Partners.
"A brief conversation about the headhunter’s requirements, whether you are interested in changing employment at that time or not, may pay dividends at a later stage in terms of building a relationship and keeping front of mind with the consultant for future roles. The nature of today’s industry and commerce means that they are constantly going through massive changes, which can impact on individuals by requiring them to be positive, supportive and flexible, especially if downsizing is required. At this point, the headhunter may be needed to find alternative employment."
"It is better to be honest with executive search companies; if you are happy tell them, but if you feel that you are also content for jobs to be referred to you then let them know that you don’t mind being contacted from time to time. Like you, the headhunter doesn’t have time to waste pursuing candidates who are not honest about their current situations. So be pleasant, upbeat and to the point. They will respect it and think better of you for it."
