Sue Tyrer contributes to the Manchester Evening News
On 6 September 2007, Warren Partners Director, Sue Tyrer, contributed to the MEN's regular Careers A-Z column. On the notion of the 'glass ceiling', she commented:
"Unfortunately the glass ceiling does exist. It mostly affects minority groups on the basis of gender or race and has contributed towards a lack of diversity in higher-level positions within organisations.
"It has always been difficult for people to break into management or boardroom roles as directors tend to promote people with previous experience. Subsequently, many applicants aren't considered even if they have suitable skills.
"Companies have a tendency to hire over-qualified candidates so they can hit the ground running. If you haven't been there, done it and seen it then you rarely get considered.
"This is why it is important to promote your worth. Many employees get promoted internally and if you can display your experience, credibility and relationships with key members of staff then you already set yourself apart from other candidates.
"Similarly, building your profile within your sector can greatly improve your chances. I would recommend, when pursing a higher-level vacancy, to take advantage of speaker opportunities, as this will build your reputation in a wider arena.
"In addition, finding a mentor or sponsor within your company can greatly improve your chances. They can provide guidance, useful advice and can be used as a sounding board. It is beneficial to approach someone who has either been in the position you wish to fulfil or is a board member or a non-executive. These are mostly informal introductions but do check with your employer first to make sure there isn't a formal procedure already in place.
"The key to breaking through the glass ceiling is demonstrating your individual skills and experience. This will allow you to progress within your field and ultimately reach your full potential."
