Tim Kemp responds to great northerners debate in the FT
On 13 September, Tim Kemp, Director at Warren Partners, responded to a debate on great northerners in a letter to the editor of the Financial Times:
Sir,
I must take umbrage with the regional bias on display from the Lancashire author of this morning's Notebook column. As a Yorkshireman born and bred, I feel compelled to fly the flag for Titus Salt, born some 48 years before William Lever was even a glint in his father's eye.
Born in Morley, near Leeds, Salt not only invented a process for spinning and weaving alpaca, but also succeeded in revolutionising attitudes to employees by building a model village, Saltaire, which allowed him to improve the health and living conditions of his factory workforce.
And all of this while helping to establish the United Reform Society and holding the offices of mayor of Bradford and Member of Parliament for Bradford!
Where Yorkshiremen lead, Lancashire folk can only hope to follow...
