Engaging with Executive Search Companies
As a candidate looking for the next step in your career, how should you go about engaging effectively with a search firm?
For us, the process begins when we take a brief from a client, where we will recommend either that they should advertise a particular vacancy or search for the right person, known more commonly as headhunting.
This procedure works in four stages: agreeing a research strategy with the client, undertaking targeted research to identify suitable candidates, seeking informal views from target sources and agreeing 'off limit' companies.
So what does that mean for you as a candidate? Well, if more and more companies are choosing not to advertise positions, then getting onto a search consultant's radar, and staying there, has never been more important.
Once you've made the initial contact with a consultant, give them as much information as you can about your requirements and abilities to ensure you are identified for relevant positions.
As search companies often work on a retained basis, it is wise to approach several firms in order to increase your chances of being selected for an appropriate role.
Finally, keep in touch on a regular basis. Once every couple of months, follow up with the consultant by e-mail to keep abreast of new opportunities and to fill them in on any changes to your situation.
