MyCSP is a pioneering mutual with a unique, joint venture partnership made up between employees, central Government and private sector pensions management and administration specialist Equiniti. MyCSP provides pension administration for the Principal Civil Service Pension Scheme. With almost 250 current and ex-government bodies and 1.5 million members, it is the third largest public sector defined benefit scheme in the UK. MyCSP serves some of the UK’s greatest institutions including The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Big Lottery Fund, British Library and English Heritage. We were initially recommended by one of the MyCSP Non-Executive Directors because of the positive experience he had working with Warren Partners when a candidate for another of our clients.
The Chairman role at MyCSP is an extremely important one, managing the interplay between the various stakeholders and enabling this comparatively new mutual to prosper. Candidates were required to have a strong outsourcing background with a good grasp of technology and public sector experience. An excellent commercial background was also important so this naturally led us to look at candidates who had achieved significant business growth in the outsourcing market.

As this was just a UK wide brief, combined with the knowledge that outsourcing is not that mature an industry (relatively) it meant finding candidates at Chairman or potential Chairman level, who did not have conflicting appointments, could be a significant challenge. In addition MyCSP was not a familiar company to candidates so it was important that we took time to engage them and accurately explain the nature of the role and the scale of the opportunity.
After a thorough search, a long list of candidates was produced. Then through discussion with the various stakeholders, the list was whittled down to a short list of five. The appointment of Chairman went to a candidate who in the view of board was "the stand out" candidate with exactly the right mix of experience, track record and personality that the MyCSP board was looking for.
