RIA (Railway Industry Association)

Chief Executive

RIA is the representative body for UK based suppliers of equipment and services to the UK and worldwide railway industry. It has around 200 member companies active across the whole gamut of railway supply with a very diverse range of skills, products and services. Following the retirement of the longstanding Director General, Warren Partners was approached to work with the Board to recruit a new Chief Executive.

The brief was clear - RIA is a highly respected and successful trade association, but the Board saw the appointment of a new Chief Executive as an opportunity to modernise, innovate, and make the organisation invaluable at a time of significant change in the industry. Demonstrating true added value to members, and potentially developing further services, would be a key challenge. The Chief Executive would position RIA as a stronger leader in the wider rail sector.

Warren Partners’ approach was to focus firmly on leadership qualities, locating those who could influence and communicate credibly at the most senior levels of industry and government. We also ensured that a proven track record building highly motivated and effective teams was apparent.

Following the presentation of a diverse shortlist, Darren Caplan was offered and accepted the role and has now commenced in post. His positive and inspirational style, impressive background in public affairs, supported by his recent highly successful tenure as Chief Executive of the Airport Operators Association, made him a great choice.

Iain Brockbank of Warren Partners said ‘we are thrilled with the outcome of this exciting mandate. Darren will do a fabulous job leading the RIA during turbulent times in the rail sector, adding value to members and the wider industry’.
