The Robinson Company

CEO

Overview

The Robinson Company is over 180 years old, and a constant theme has been the ability of the business to “reimagine” itself. The company originated as a pill-box business before becoming a broader packaging supplier. It later successfully diversified into surgical dressings and sanitary products, becoming a pioneer in disposable nappies. More recently, the company has focused on rigid plastics packaging and expanded internationally. It currently operates in a wide range of market sectors including Food, Personal Care, Cosmetics and Home Care, working with global brands and has a reputation for innovation, service, quality and technical excellence – all delivered with a customer service ethos typical of the family business from which the now listed Group originates.

In a world where consumers are correctly challenging the impact of plastic waste on the environment, however, Alan Raleigh the Chairman and the rest of the Board were keen to ensure that Robinson played its part going forward in ensuring the lowest possible impact from the design, manufacture and use of the plastic products. Alan’s vision is for Robinson to become “established as the best Circular economy integrator in niche plastics packaging across Europe” and he approached Warren Partners to help recruit an inspirational new Chief Executive to lead this latest transformation for the Group.

Challenge

The Board was keen to appoint an individual who not only had the necessary understanding and experience to keep the company operating efficiently and generating a return for the shareholders during the transformation, but also someone with the missionary zeal to understand the bigger Circular Economy agenda which the company is seeking to play a leading role within going forward.

Chairman Alan Raleigh commented “We were looking for someone who could immediately step into the CEO role and make a real difference as an inspirational, purpose led leader who could drive a sustainability agenda at a critical time for the Packaging Industry”.

Outcome

The Board was delighted with the appointment of Dr Helene Roberts as CEO in November 2019. Helene’s background was ideally suited to the demands of the role. After completing her PhD she started her career with M&S, initially as a materials technologist before spending seven years as Head of Packaging for Food and Drink. Helene then moved across into industry, in marketing and innovation focused roles with Sealed Air, Benson Box and Graphic Packaging International. More recently Helene was Director of Global Marketing and Innovation at LINPAC and Klockner Pentaplast, before becoming MD for UK, Ireland and Australia.

Alan commented “this was without doubt a challenging brief and I was delighted that Warren Partners were able to produce such a diverse shortlist of potential candidates, from which we ultimately appointed Helene”. “We were impressed by the time you invested in our business to make sure you understood exactly what we were looking for and the communication at each stage was excellent. Helene has been an outstanding appointment for us”.
